Kawu, who distinguished himself as a rabid pro-Fulani newspaper columnist and anti-Saraki advocate was chosen in particular to confront the hold of the Sarakis in the state.

The APC had before then been looking towards Kwara North for its candidate in the principle of zoning given that the outgoing governor is from Kwara South and that his presidential, Dr. Bukola Saraki is from Kwara Central.
Kwara Central has about 48% of the population of the state.
Kawu was chosen ahead of three other aspirants including Mohammed Dele Belgore SAN, Abdulrazaq Abdulrahaman and Alh Akeem Lawal.
