Ambode Again Caves In: Set To Return PSP Operators To Waste Collection

Published

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has caved in to the motion of the Lagos State House of Assembly recalling the Private Sector Partnership, PSP operators to handle waste collection in the state.

In that respect it was learnt that Ambode has recalled the former General Manager of the State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Ola Oresanya, to help in fashioning the operational pattern for the PSP operators.

Ambode had not long after he came into office sacked Oresanya on the claim that fresh hands were needed in the collection of waste in Lagos. The governor thereafter went on to appoint Visionscape, a foreign company to handle the exercise. The company, however, has largely failed with mountains of refuse loitering all over the city and along normally pristine roads.

The involvement of the PSP operators was also said to be an operational system for servicing political operatives of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the state. It was widely reported that the governor’s action against the PSP operators contributed largely to the decision of the party in Lagos to stop Ambode from a second term.

The State House of Assembly had last week in a unanimous resolution asked the PSP operators to return to the streets and asked that the contract with Visionscape be immediately terminated.

The governor’s feeble adoption of the resolution is reflective of his apparent lack of political capital.
