Upon Outrage Ganduje Backs Down On Denial Of Stadium To Atiku
Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano State on Wednesday backed down on his controversial plot to deny the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP the use of the state-owned Sani Abacha Stadium for its presidential rally.
Governor Ganduje had raised a stir after it was revealed that the governor had ordered renovation of the stadium days before the PDP was to use it for its rally.
The order had compounded the public image of the governor who had been the object of national ridicule following the circulation of video clips of him allegedly collecting bribes from contractors.
The investigation of the issue has been stalled in the State House of Assembly and the courts.
The PDP had earlier on Wednesday cited Ganduje’s closure of the Kano Stadium as a provocation and threatened to withdraw from the peace accord initiated by the General Abdulsalami Abubakar led Peace Committee.
The order to stop the renovation came vide a public statement issued by the Kano State commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba.
The statement, however, said the governor’s
reprieve would not stop ongoing renovation of the Indoor Sports Complex.
‘’As a democrat who believes in freedom of
association, His Excellency the governor did not ordered the closure of the
stadium to frustrate the campaign rally of the PDP. The stadium only closed for
the intended renovation works,’’ the statement added.
