Says It Was Politically Motivated

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State on Friday acknowledged the arrest of the state’s accountant-general, Mr. Casmir Uzoho by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC based on petitions it claimed originated from politicians in the state.

The government said the petitions were originated by the politicians in the hope that it would cripple the finances of the state government with the intention that it would frustrate the governor’s support for Uche Nwosu’s governorship bid.

A statement issued by Sam Onwumeodo, chief press secretary to the governor said:

“Aside receiving calls from media Practitioners to that effect, our attention has also been drawn to the reported arrest of the Accountant-General of the State Mr. Casmir Uzoho by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, over alleged “money laundering”.

“The truth is that some desperate and frustrated governorship Candidates in the State have sponsored petitions to the Commission against the Accountant-General few days to the governorship election making several allegations. And following the petitions, the AG was invited by the Commission, which was normal.

“The petition to the EFCC could be perhaps, the last effort by these fraudsters who want to govern the State, to see if they could stop the moving train because, to them, once the AG is arrested there won’t be money to finance the election of Uche Nwosu again. This was their mindsets. And they know that the governor does not need to spend money for Uche Nwosu to win.

“The government has continued to function or work. And has been carrying out its empowerment programmes which the governor had promised several months ago and a promise he wants to fulfill before leaving Office, including the stipends for students and pupils, free school bags and other empowerment programmes.

“The enemies of the State who felt that with the empowerment programmes Uche Nwosu would gain currency politically thought that the best option was to petition to EFCC. These guys are introducing strange politics in the State and they won’t fly.

“They had earlier dished out falsehood that Uche Nwosu has been disqualified by an Abuja High Court. That lie didn’t endure. They had also gotten exhausted over the unsellable issue of son-in-law.

“They also made an academic Professor who was the Returning Officer for Imo West Senatorial District election who had announced results of the 9 out of the 12 LGAs that make up Orlu zone to lie that he announced the results of the Senatorial election under duress simply because the agents insisted that since he had the results of the remaining 3 LGAs he should announce them against his insistence that he would announce the rest in Owerri which was very suspicious.

“There is nothing they have not done just to see whether they could stop a young man whose time has come, by the grace of God. Uche Nwosu is a child of destiny. And those fighting him are fighting his God and nobody can fight God and remain erect.”
