Thanks To Buhari, 3 Million Children Are In School – Support Group

The Buhari Media Organisation, BMO has lauded the disclosure that the number of Out-Of-School has fallen from 13.2 Million children to 10.1 Million children saying it is a testament to the successes of the President Buhari administration’s policies in targeting Nigeria’s young populations and the poor.

The commendation followed the assertion by the minister of education, Adamu Adamu.

The group in a statement signed by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju and  Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, the group stated that the President Buhari administration had put in place strategic policies and programmes that had resulted to this significant drop in the number of out-of-school children.

“When this government came on board, it embarked on certain programmes such as the Social Investment Programmes, targeted at the poorest of the poor Nigerians. The programmes targeted poor children, poor parents, unemployed graduates and proprietors of small businesses. Of particular interest is the Home Grown School Feeding Programme which was put in place to provide a healthy meal a day for children in public primary schools across the country.

“This Home Grown School Feeding Programme is currently feeding 9.5 Million pupils in schools in 30 States of the country. The programme has been very instrumental in encouraging parents to send their children to school. Poor parents who worry about what their children would eat are relieved to know their children would be fed if they send them to school, and thus have enrolled their children in public primary schools across the country.”

The group noted that since the Home Grown School Feeding Programme commenced, millions of children have been enrolled in schools across the country.

The group also pointed out that President Buhari’s pro-poor programmes which have put more disposable funds in the hands of Nigeria’s poorest families have also encouraged low income parents to send their children to school.

“The President Buhari administration remains committed to the welfare of the poorest Nigerians. That is why in the past four years his administration has embarked on policies aimed at making their lives and welfare better. With the Trader, Market and Farmer Moni Loan Schemes, Nigeria’s low income traders now have access to credit and more income. With the Conditional Cash Transfers to the poorest of the poor Nigerians, we now have those at the bottom of the pyramid being empowered with funds to improve their welfare and well-being.

“With more income and more funds in the hands of the poorest people in the country, they are now encouraged to send their children to school. This is what has reflected in the drop in the number of out-of-school children by over 3 million.”

The group noted that: “this means that within the period of 2015 to 2019, three million children who previously had no access to the four walls of a classroom now have that access under President Buhari.”

The group stated further that other policies such as the Special Education Programme, the Boy and Girl Child Education Programme, and the Almajiri Sensitization Programmes also played a role in this improvement.

“We are delighted to hear that after a census by the Universal Basic Education, the National Population Commission and the National Bureau of Statistics, the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria has dropped by over 3 Million children. It is noteworthy and must be commended, but those who have made this a success must not rest on their oars, but continue to push to bring the number to zero,” the statement added.
