Emmanuel Intervenes To Stem Revolt By Akwa Ibom Councilors Against Chairmen
Udom Emmanuel has intervened to stem a faceoff between local government councilors and chairmen following bloody conflicts in at least three councils over alleged marginalization between the councilors and the chairmen.
The governor on Wednesday morning summoned a meeting with the two categories of political office holders to resolve the dispute between them centered on the reward package for the councilors.
The councilors gwg.ng learnt were peeved that they were being underpaid by the chairmen, a development that led the councilors to serve notice of displeasure towards the chairmen.
The chairmen in some councils in the state, it was learnt, however, took the notice as a threat of war or possible impeachment by the councilors.
In at least three councils, meetings by the councilors to ponder over how to carry out their agitation were aborted leading to serious casualties.
It was gathered since they were elected and sworn into office in December, 12, 2017 they never received wardrobe, furniture allowance, no impress, constituency allowance due to them. They only receive their monthly salary
They had threatened to protest about the situation after the General Election but the council chairmen were said to have seriously raised their opposition to the agitation. One female councilor was bruised on Tuesday when a meeting in one of the councils was broken up by thugs allegedly hired by one of the council chairmen.
“The council chairmen who are against the agitations by the councillors resorted to using thugs following plots by the aggrieved councillors to impeach them for ineffective representation and insensitivity to their plight,” a source privy to the development told www.gwg.ng
The meeting between the governor, council chairmen and councilors is ongoing and Mr. Emmanuel is expected to lay down strong precepts of accountability to all concerned given his apparent determination not to allow the development dent the image of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP which he led to triumph in the recent elections.
