Presidential Election Tribunal Warns Against Media Briefings As Hearing Begins

The Presidential Election Tribunal on Wednesday morning commenced sitting on four petitions filed against the return of Muhammadu Buhari as president of the country in the recent presidential election.

The president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa who is the chairman of the five man tribunal immediately cautioned parties to the different cases not to play up their sentiments in the media.

She vowed that the panel would put the best interest of the country and take into consideration best international practices in its adjudication of the cases.

She also revealed that more than 700 petitions were lodged against the outcome of the various elections recently conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC with the highest number of cases being from Imo State.

The other members of the panel hearing the presidential election petitions are Justices Samuel Oseji, Joseph Ikyeghn, , Abdul Aboki and Peter Olabisi Ige.

While affirming equal allocation of time to all the parties, she nevertheless cautioned them against playing up their claims in the media and should be played down in the public as much as possible.

The petitioners in the case include Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Ambrose Owuru of the Hope Democratic Party, HDP, Pastor Aminchi Habu of the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM and Jeff Ojinika of the Coalition for Change, C4C

Among those present at the opening session of the tribunal hearing were Mr. Peter Obi, the vice-presidential candidate of the PDP.
