NGO Gives Edo Traffic Agency Ultimatum To Prosecute Lawmaker’s Wife
By Femi Ayodele
A non-governmental organization, Edo Civil Society Organization, EDOSCO, has vowed to drag the management Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) to court to compel it prosecute the wife of the majority leader of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Roland Asoro over an alleged traffic offence.
The threat by EDOSCO follows social media storm over the alleged altercation between EDSTMA officials and Mrs. Asoro. Mrs. Asoro was alleged to have been driving a government-issued vehicle and driven past the traffic light at First East Circular Junction on Sapele Road.
The video of the altercation which has since gone viral saw the EDSTMA officials trying to force her to go with them which she resisisted. There were also shots of bruises sustained by the traffic officials.
While many have rounded up on the majority leader and his wife and asked for their immediate prosecution, some other members of the social media community have also raised issues alleging that there was no shot of the woman committing the offence or of her physically engaging the traffic officials besides the verbal exchanges.
While some who know her personally have come to her defence that the behaviour narrated was strange to her, others including the EDOSCO are asking for her and her husband to be sanctioned.
EDOSCO in its petition to the ESTMA authorities are asking to be shown the receipt of the fine extracted from Mrs. Asoro failing which it would lodge a court action against ESTMA to compel it to sanction the wife of the legislator.
A video which was seen by gwg.ng available in some social media platforms, showed the altercation between Mrs. Asoro and some officials of EDSTMA who deployed a towing vehicle to move her car to their office while she was still holding grip of the car steering wheel.
EDOCSO, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Comrade Osazee Edigin, gave 48 hours ultimatum to the managing director of EDSTMA, Mr. Dennis Oloriegbe to ensure that Mrs. Asoro is prosecuted, the necessary fines are paid and the assaulted traffic officer is duly compensated.
In its petition, EDOSCO wrote:
“A close look at the impounded vehicle revealed a government official number plate affixed to it, we cannot remember when she was voted and with the right to government official number plate.
“Citizens are being taken to EDSTMA offices helplessly and made to pay fines when they flout traffic laws and regulations, we see no reason the wife of a lawmaker whose husband made same law should be allowed to disobey the law and being aided by her husband with impunity.
“To this end, we are giving the MD of EDSTMA, 48 hours to publicly show to Edo people receipt of payment in government coffers by the offender or we shall resist further apprehension of Edo people who violates traffic rules by officials of EDSTMA. Nobody is above the law, more so, this is coming from the wife of a lawmaker.”
