Omo-Agege Emerges DSP
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege swept aside the ghost of his alleged role in the mace snatching incident of 2018 to emerge as the Deputy President of the Senate on Tuesday.
He polled 68 votes to defeat his only challenger, Senator Ike Ekweremadu who was presented by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Ekweremadu scored 37 votes meaning that at least five senators from the PDP may not have voted for him.
Before the election, Ekweremadu said he was offering himself as a candidate in defence of the sacredness of the institution and independence of the Senate. However, senators-elect waived aside the issue to return Omo-Agege as the Deputy President of the Senate.
Senator Ali Ndume who earlier lost the vote for the office of Senate President did not cast a vote in the election for the Deputy Senate President. The new Senate President also did not vote.
It is the first time that someone from the South-South would emerge as a presiding officer of the Senate in the Fourth Republic.
