Showdown In National Assembly As PDP Rejects APC’s Lawan, Gbajabiamila
A showdown between the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC was in the offing on Tuesday morning as the country’s major opposition party gave effect to its rejection of the duo of Senator Ahmad Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as presiding officers of the National Assembly.
At the end of a conference of PDP leaders early on Tuesday, the party requested its members-elect to vote for Senator Ali Ndume and Mohammed Bago in the leadership contest in the Senate and the House of Representatives respectively.
The APC had earlier presented Lawan as its candidate for Senate President and Gbajabiamila as its choice for Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The PDP resolution was reached early on Tuesday at a meeting of PDP National Working Committee, NWC, with governors, members-elect and other prominent members of the party. The meeting ended at about 2.30 a.m.
A communique issued by the PDP national secretary, Senator Ibrahim Tsauri said that it “is in the best interest of the nation, in line with our party’s determination to deepen democracy, ensure a strong and independent legislature, strict compliance with the principle of separation of powers as well as constitutional checks and balances in the polity.
“All senators and members-elect on the platform of the PDP are to be guided accordingly.”
