Three days after he was inaugurated for a third term, Senator David Umaru was on Friday sacked by the Supreme Court from the Senate.

The country’s apex court held that he was not the validly nominated candidate of the party for the Niger East Senatorial District. The court in a unanimous judgment held that the appellant, Mohammed Sani was the validly nominated candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC who the court said should be given the Certificate of Return.

The decision set aside the earlier judgment of the Court of Appeal which had favoured Umaru.

Umaru was in the 8th Senate the chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Human Rights. He entered the Senate towards the end of the 7th Senate following an election for the vacant seat of Niger East that occurred upon the death of the then occupant, Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta
