Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State has again dragged Vice President Yemi Osinbajo into the controversial Ruga Settlement plans of the Federal Government with his assertion that it was the same plan as that conceived by a committee headed by the vice-president.

Governor Lalong spoke in the Presidential Villa on Monday following a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari. After the meeting, Lalong who is also chairman of the Northern Governors Forum said:

“I think, the Ruga thing should not be anything that should bring controversy with the level of sensitization we have already made. I am a member of the food security committee, I am a member of the herdsmen/farmers committee, (of NEC headed by Osinbajo) we have gone a long way on this issue and we have said that the only solution that can address some of these insecurity issues between herdsmen and farmers is the ranching policy.

Again, we have gone far under the leadership of Mr Vice President, and then we are hearing other terms, what they are talking about it’s the same thing that we are talking about.

The Ruga initiative is different from the National Livestock Transformation Plan approved by State governors under the auspices of the National Economic Council chaired by VP Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

“You remember that one time we have gone far when some people called it colony and called it this and that, and it created controversy.

” Again, we have gone far under the leadership of Mr Vice President, and then we are hearing other terms, what they are talking about it’s the same thing that we are talking about.

“But I think when they mentioned Ruga, it may be particular to a particular tribe but what we are doing is all encompassing, it’s for the benefit of Nigeria. I have said particularly in my state that animal husbandry, live stocks rearing is not a prerogative of one tribe.”

However, Osinbajo’s spokesman, Mr. Laolu Akande had following a similar assertion by Baba Uthman Ngelzarma, General Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN washed his hands off the Ruga settlement programme that aims to build infrastructure such as roads, hospitals, vet clinics, schools among others for the settlers.

He had said: “The Ruga initiative is different from the National Livestock Transformation Plan approved by State governors under the auspices of the National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.”
