It’s Not Just Social Media, Your Voice Can Also Be Heard

Social Media Killing Reading Culture In Nigeria - Proprietor

In the past few days, social media has been at the forefront of protests against ills in the Nigerian society. The wave started with the COZA pastor saga, then the say no to RUGA settlements to Buhari signing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA)  to #Madona7 as well as Elisha Abbo’s case.

This goes to show that it’s not “just social media” as some would allude. The good thing about social media activism is that anyone can put in a voice and you don’t have to run a column in a newspaper to lend a voice to an army of protesters. You also don’t have to be an extremely good writer to have input.

As the world increasingly become more digital, messages move faster and can be seen by anyone at any given time.

I remember as a child, I used to wait two days to read sports news from a particular newspaper, but as it is now, I get sport news on the go from following sports news outlets.

In this vein, the world gets to see what’s happening as it happens. Broadcast media would describe it as On the go Journalism.

If not for social media, the world wouldn’t have heard of the outcry from Sudan. It is a tried and tested method.

In the case of COZA, Nigerians have contributed towards fighting win in monetary terms, the RUGA settlement was suspended, Madonna University released the seven persons arrested without trial, and Elisha Abbo is to face trial at a magistrate court. It all comes to a good end, but we can go further by demanding for accountability from our leaders.

So, when next you’re ranting on social media and someone tells you to stop making noise by telling you it’s “Just Social Media”, tell him or her “It’s not Just Social Media,” your voice can be heard, your voice can make am impact.
