Government and youth groups in Ibeno local government area of Akwa Ibom state, are pilling pressure on ExxonMobil to respond quickly to the latest oil spill in the area with the council boss Mr. Ifum Udoh threatening legal action over alleged violation of environmental laws.
It was gathered that the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency NOSDRA recently confirmed oil spill at the shores of several communities in Ibeno Local government area.
A source within the council explained on Wednesday that the spill was confirmed when officials of NOSDRA led by Mr. Alademomi Gideon visited the affected communities.
The source said the council boss put a call the to the Manager Public and Government Affairs of ExxonMobil whose facilities caused the spill immediately it was established by NOSDRA.
The chairman said he told the public affairs manager to advise the top management of the company not to play the usual denial game, rather that they should be ready to meet Ibeno communities in court.
Reacting to the development, Chairman Ibeno Youth President Forum (IYPF) Mr. James Eshiet decried the level of destruction of aquatic life and their crops caused by oil spills from ExxonMobil facilities.
Oil spills from ExxonMobil facilities have been a recurring decimal but we have also recorded cases of denial from the American oil giant.
Ibeno youths under my watch will make sure this time ExxonMobil company lived up to its responsibility.”
