By Ayodele Oluwafemi
There was pandemonium at the State High Court in Benin City on Tuesday morning, after a corpse was discovered on the first floor of the five-storey building.
The corpse was identified as that of a 65-year old Moses Airiagbonkpa, of Ugiokhuen Community in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state, who had accompanied his kinsmen to the court for a community land dispute case.
GWG gathered that, the deceased left some of his kinsmen at the Court 10 lobby, as they waited for a new date for their court sitting on the issue, before taking a break to visit the restroom.
It was learnt that the deceased missed the direction to the restroom and mistakenly fell from the 5th floor through a non- functional lift to the first floor.
Speaking to news men at the high court, one of the community leaders, Mr. Johnson Obanor said he, the deceased and other community leaders came to court for a community land dispute case, on getting to the court they discovered that the court was not sitting, adding that during the period of waiting for a new date, the deceased asked for a period to visit the restroom.
“We were asked to come here this morning to attend a community matter. We came here, we sat down, we later understand that the court was not sitting. We had to wait for our lawyer to come and get a new date.
“So this man (pointing to the lifeless body on the floor) got up, we sat down together, and he said he wanted to urinate.
“We started waiting for him, maybe he go soon come, so I kon bring out my phone, to start calling him, the phone ring ring, no body dey pick, ring ring nobody dey pick.
“So we cone frontage here, we see people dey run up and down, one lawyer tell us shey, make we go look, shey somebody fell from up. na we kon see shey na our brother,” he narrated in Pidgin English.
As at the time for filing this report, the lifeless body is yet to be evacuate from the place of incident.
