How 17-Man Faction Surrendered To 11 Members In Bauchi Assembly Crisis
By Editor
The crisis in the Bauchi State House of Assembly has come to an end following the decision of the 17 factional members to submit to the leadership of the Abubakar Ningi led 11 member faction.
The Ningi led faction was loyal to Governor Bala Mohammed.
The dramatic cave-in of the 17 member faction led by the erstwhile Speaker of the House of Assembly in the last dispensation, Kawuwa Shehu Damina (Darazo), GWG gathered, followed the intervention of the state’s first class traditional rulers.
Even more, the 17 member faction even though in majority had also been constrained by a court order that stopped Damina from parading himself as the Speaker of the House of Assembly.
Ningi and Damina had been elected in separate occasions. The Ningi faction comprising eight Peoples Democratic Party, PDP members and three All Progressives Congress, APC members elected Ningi while the 17 others belonging to the APC elected Damina.
Sources in the state said Governor Mohammed broke the resolve of the 17 member faction through the influence of traditional rulers who were able to persuade the members to submit to the 11 member faction.
Speaker Ningi was not available at the surprise inauguration. A source said his position is not at risk as he was believed to have travelled for the hajj in Saudi Arabia.
His deputy, Dallami Ahmed Kawule presided at the special session that was witnessed by Governor Mohammed.
Thanking the state’s traditional rulers for their role in resolving the crisis after the inauguration, Governor Mohammed said:
“I am happy that this misunderstanding between House members has ended today. They have now all been inaugurated and we can now progress as one people with the goal to develop Bauchi State.
“Our royal fathers shone the light by using their good offices to resolve the issues between aggrieved members. We are immensely grateful to them. We pray for longer lives for them so they can continue to guide us aright.”
