Civil rights lawyer and activist, Chief Femi Falana has said that the police is duty bound to protect the protesters during the Monday protest against bad governance.

Speaking in an interview, Falana said the last public protest in the country was the one led by General Muhammadu Buhari as he was then in November 2014 and that a government led by him was duty bound to protect the right of citizens to protest.

He said that under the law that the police was bound to give protection to protesters and that he had in that respect written the Inspector General of Police to give protection to the protesters.

Buhari leading the November 2014 Salvation Protest

“The last public protest was led by Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on 19th November 2014 when he and other leaders of the APC led a public protest against insecurity in the country,” he said.

“The police will be required to protect them, no more no less. We are not a conquered people, therefore you cannot continue to terrorise Nigerians by invoking the provisions of the terrorism act.”

He said that today’s democratic culture was birthed by the struggle of individuals and that no one in government should use his opportunity to suppress that right.
