The coalition of former presidential candidates and aspirants in the 2019 presidential election under the aegis of Third Force Forum, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari, to immediately order the release of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore.

Recall that Sowore, the presidential candidate of AAC, in the 2019 general elections was arrested by the Department of the State Service, DSS, at his residence on Saturday for planning a protest against the growing insecurity and general economic hardship on Monday August 5th.

The group in a petition addressed to President Buhari, disclosed that the planned protest for which Sowore was arrested on August 2nd was within his rights as provided in the constitution.

The group said, “We, the Coalition of former 2019 Presidential Aspirants and Candidates, under the aegis of Third Force Forum, hereby demand the unconditional release of one of our compatriots, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, who was arrested by an agency of the government on August 2, 2019, pursuant to plans for a protest march across Nigeria; which is within his full constitutional rights toward “Freedom of Expression”, pursuant to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“We must also remind you Mr. President, that in addition to the Nigerian Constitution, Nigeria also subscribes to other International Treaties, which prohibit violation of human rights of her citizens.

“To refrain from adhering to these national and international rights, is to invite anarchy onto the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

The group reminded the President that as a government that subscribed to the rule of law, it has a more decent way of dealing with any breach of peace without necessarily in flinging on the fundamental rights of the people.

As a way of allowing peace to reign, the forum  urged Buhari to order  security agencies involved in the arrest to unconditionally release Sowore.
