Edo Assembly: Another Court Restrains NASS
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has restrained the Senate and the House of Representatives on their resolution to take over legislative duties of the Edo State House of Assembly.
In the judgement, on Wednesday, Justice Taiwo Taiwo made the order following a suit filed by the Edo State Government to challenge the resolution of both chambers of the National Assembly to the Governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, to issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the state House of Assembly.
Justice Taiwo ruled that both parties in the case should maintain status quo pending the determination of the case.
It would be recalled that the National Assembly had threatened to take over the legislative duties of the Edo State House of Assembly should the governor fail to make the fresh proclamation with one week.
A federal high court sitting in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State had issued a similar order last week restraining the governor from issuing a fresh proclamation order.
According to the court, the orders followed requests sought by the Deputy Speaker of the Edo House of Assembly, Hon. Yekini Idiaye; and the member representing Ikpoba-Okha Constituency in the Edo Assembly, Hon. Henry Okhuarobo, who are the plaintiffs/applicants.
