Alaibe’s Court Bid To Stop Dickson’s ‘Delegates’ Suffers Setback
By Asolo Eyedoude
A bid by front line Peoples Democratic Party, PDP aspirant Chief Timi Alaibe to stop local government chairmen as delegates in the forthcoming governorship primaries in Bayelsa State has derailed.
Though local government chairmen, deputies and councilors are supposed to be automatic delegates, a provision in the PDP constitution putting a question to the participation of political office holders appointed within 90 days of the congress is a matter of contention for Alaibe.
Alaibe believes that the local government chairmen and councilors who came into office about a month ago owe their allegiance to the outgoing governor who had in a secret meeting directed them not to vote for Alaibe.
Justice E.G. Umukoro on Friday granted the order for the preservation of status quo while hearing two suits involving the inclusion of the chairmen, their deputies and councillors as delegates in the September 3, 2019 gubernatorial primaries in the state.
The suits were the one filed by Chief Timi Alaibe, which sought to prevent the local government officials from participating in the forthcoming primaries as delegates and a parallel one by the Chairmen, the vice chairmen and councilors which sought to enforce their right to participation in the primaries as provided for by Section 25 of the PDP Constitution.
The judge ruled in the two cases which were combined that the status quo be sustained in the issue of the inclusion of the elected local government chairmen as delegates in the gubernatorial primaries.
The court will take arguments on both cases on Monday.
