Pope Francis was stuck in an elevator in the Vatican on Sunday morning forcing him to come late for his noon blessing at St. Peter’s Square.

However, as the minutes ticked by after the normal noontime appearance, and the pope was unusually not around, worshippers were left wondering as to the whereabouts of the pontiff.

Their question was answered after seven minutes when the pope when the pope finally appeared to tender his apologies saying he had been trapped in an elevator for 25 minutes.

“First of all I must excuse myself for being late. I was blocked in an elevator for 25 minutes.”

He inferred that the problem was caused by electric failure. “Thank God the firefighters intervened,” Francis said.

The pope then asked for a round of applause for the firefighters as he commenced his Sunday blessings and remarks including the announcement that the church is to have 13 new cardinals.
