Amidst Intrigues Bayelsa PDP Guber Primary Goes Underway
By Asolo Eyedoude
The Governorship Primary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State is underway.
Accreditation of the 1,306 delegates from the eight local government areas started at about 2.00 p.m. at the Ijaw House located along the Sani Abacha Road in Yenagoa.
Accreditation began with delegates from Brass with those from Ekeremor, Kolokuma-Opokuma, Nembe, Sagbama, Southern Ijaw, Yenagoa and Ogbia due to take their turns thereafter.
The delegates are expected to move the Gabriel Okara Cultural Center along the Melford Okilo Road in Yenagoa for voting .
Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State who is the chairman of the Election Committee had earlier addressed 20 aspirants except Mr. Talford Ongolo, the former Chief of Staff, Government House who pulled out of the race.
Governor Ishaku assured all the aspirants of a level playing ground during the elective congress.
The roads close to the venues of the primary have been cordoned off with traffic diverted to other roads.
GreenWhiteGreen reporter who went round town said security has been beefed up in and around the venue of the primary and major areas in Yenagoa.
Meanwhile, ahead of the primary election, there were strong indications last night of pressures mounted on some of the PDP aspirants to step down for Governor Dickson’s preferred candidate.
The first to throw the shocker was the immediate past Chief of staff to the current governor, Hon. Ongolo, who stepped down after a series of meetings with his kinsmen in his home town in Oporoma, Southern Ijaw Local government area, of Bayelsa state.
GreenWhiteGreen gathered from a source that the Ex-chief of staff had negotiations with Dickson for a reappointment, reimbursement for monies spent on his campaign and a possible replacement as the Senator for Bayelsa central if his preferred candidate becomes the governor.
Meanwhile, prospects of Governor Dickson’s preferred aspirant, Senator Douye Diri succeeding remained an issue among party stakeholders with some alleging that he is not strong enough to push the party to victory.
