Commercial activities were put on hold as Bayelsans from all the eight local government areas trooped out in large numbers to receive the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship flagbearer, Senator Douye Diri, on his arrival from Abuja where he picked up his certificate of return on Friday.

The reception which had in attendance other aspirants including the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Kemela Okara, Chief Benson Agadaga, David Alagoa and others was held at the popular Peace Park, Government House, Yenagoa.

However, conspicuously absent and not mentioned was his main contender, Chief Timi Alaibe. No word was mentioned about him at the otherwise festive ceremony.

Addressing the mammoth crowd, the PDP Governorship flagbearer Senator Diri described the event as a clear indication that the PDP remains one united and indivisible family contrary to insinuations that the emergence of 21 governorship aspirants could cause an implosion within the party.

He particularly commended the governor of the state, Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson for his untiring efforts at strengthening the PDP, which he noted was the only dominant party in the state.

Senator Diiri commended the other aspirants for their spirit of sportsmanship, adding that after his declaration  as the winner of the party primary the other aspirants displayed political maturity by congratulating him.

He said the development has proved the critics wrong that the party is in disarray.

The PDP, according to him, remains a solid, cohesive formidable party in good stead to win November 16, 2019 Governorship election.

He added that other governorship aspirants who could not attend his reception have made calls to him assuring that they would work for the success of the party.

The Senator also expressed gratitude to the Governor Darius Ishiaku-led Electoral Panel for conducting a free , fair and transparent PDP primary as well as the delegates for placing the party’s interest above their personal ambitions.

His words: “Like I said in my acceptance speech, the winner of the governorship primary is the PDP. We are still one family. Those who are not here have called to congratulate me and assured that they would work for the party.

“We are united. Bayelsa’s governorship primary was transparent and open. I thank all the delegates. You took PDP high and above your personal interests.”

Earlier in his speech, the state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Moses Cleopas, said with the election of Senator Diri to fly the party’s flag, the time has come for all to join hands towards ensuring that the party achieves victory in the governorship poll come November 16.

Mr. Cleopas who described the outcome of the primary election as ‘no victor, no vanquished’ urged all stakeholders to work towards ensuring that the party wins the governorship election.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Tonye Isenah and member PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Remi Kuku congratulated Senator Diri and assured him of their total support.

Also, in their separate remarks, some governorship aspirants, Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Kemela Okara, Chief Benson Agadaga and Mr. David Alagoa congratulated Senator Diri and pledged support to him.

Also at the event were the Senator representing Bayelsa West, Senator Lawrence Erudjakpor among other dignitaries.
