Xenophobic Attacks: MTN Commences Phased Reopening On Monday

MTN, the South African controlled telecommunications company is to partially reopen on Monday, GreenWhiteGreen has learnt.

An internal circular to stakeholders from the top management, however, directed that only MTN owned service centres to open on Monday while partner owned stores would remain closed.

The company disclosed that the phased reopening is “a cautionary measure that will allow us monitor the situation one last time on Monday. We sincerely apologise for all the inconvenience.”

MTN partner shops are, however, to reopen on Tuesday provided there are no security concerns.

The company in a message to partners said:

Dear Partner,

Thanks for your esprit de corps in these trying circumstances.

In the light of the recent events, we reassure you that the security of you our partner and staff is of the utmost importance to us, hence our Connect stores are to remain closed on Monday September, 10 2019.

Operations are to  resume Tuesday September, 11 2019, on  confirmation of  the non-existence of  further threat to our business.

MTN Nigeria owned by South African based MTN had been the target of some Nigerian protesters against the xenophobic tendencies of the South African population. 

The company had recently tried to distance itself from the xenophobic of South Africans. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the CEO, MTN Nigeria, Ferdi Moolman, said the company was against all forms violence and xenophobia against people.

“MTN Nigeria strongly condemns hate, prejudice and xenophobia and reiterate our unequivocal condemnation of all violence. We seek to connect people, bring people together and provide a platform for everyone’s voice to be heard. We are against all forms of bigotry and discrimination; they should have no place in society,” he added.
