‘Why Is Kalu’s Prosecution Dragging?’ Protesters Ask EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was on Thursday put to task on what was alleged to be the dithering procrastination in the trial of the erstwhile governor of Abia State and the incumbent Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.

A group, Network for the Advancement of Good Governance, led protesters to the Abuja headquarters of the EFCC where they alleged that the allegations of corruption leveled against the former governor had been left to hang.

Kalu is standing trial alongside his ex-commissioner for finance, Ude Udeogu and Slok Nigeria Limited, his company upon allegations of laundering N7.6 billion from the state government’s accounts.

Addressing the media at the office of the EFCC, National Coordinator of the group, Igwe Igwe said:

“We are at the EFCC office today to demand for accelerated ruling and trial of former Governor Orji Uzor Kalu on the alleged N7.6billion criminal charges levelled against him by EFCC.”

“We are worried that the former governor and many others who had allegedly looted their state treasuries of tax payers money are still walking our streets free persons and we think this was not in the spirit of the anti-corruption crusade which is the hallmark of President Mohammadu Buhari led government .

“Today the former governor despite the alleged N7.6billion fraud case against him still parades himself as a good disciple of Buhari  and  a acclaimed APC leader for south East.”

“We have followed over the years the long tortuous journey and drama that characterised the trial of former governor of Abia state Chief Orj  Uzor- kalu over the alleged N7.6 billion corruption levelled against him by the Econimic and Financial Crime Commission ( EFCC).”

“You will all agree with us that the trial of the former governor has been on a snail speed.  

“Recall that the former governor had at some point  filed a no case suit at the Federal High Court . We did not also know why his trial was adjourned indefinitely at some point,” he said. 

“Most democrats were happy when a federal High Court sitting in Lagos ruled this year that the former governor has a case to answer. 

“First, we want to salute the courage of the leadership of the anti-graft agency and the court in insisting that the former governor has a case to answer .

“We have also noted with dismay the desperate attempts by the former governor to frustrate his trial, deploying his antics and resources to delay judicial proceedings .  

“The former governor had in one of his failed drama told the whole world that he was in German hospital for surgery and may return for check-ups until December last year when he was expected to heal 

” But we were at loss when we saw this same politician who claimed to be sick in a foreign  hospital actively participating in APC organised campaign in Abia that same period.”
