Buhari’s Global Politicking Forces Trump To Release N108 Billion Abacha Loot
By Emmanuel Aziken
President Muhammadu Buhari’s outreaches towards China and Russia may have compelled the Donald Trump administration in the Unites States to change its hard stance with the planned release of $300 million (N108 billion) looted funds recovered from the late Head of State, Sani Abacha.
The money trapped in the United States is expected to be released soon to the country, US Treasury Secretary Brent Macintosh told President Buhari according to Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.
Shehu said the news of the imminent release was made known when Macintosh visited President Buhari in his hotel suite while the president was in Saudi Arabia.
Macintosh who came along with Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs and Marshall Billingslea, Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing in the United States Treasury Department according to Shehu also raised possibility of the U S investing in Nigeria under the new United States International Development Finance Corporation (USIDFC).
The new corporation which is set to come into existence any moment from now will offer $60 billion for investments in developing nations mostly for the private sector.
The olive branch from the United States it was claimed may be a result of President Buhari’s outreach to the east for development assistance.
The president has lately deepened financial relationship between Nigeria and China and was recently in Russia for the Russia-Africa summit in Sochi, Russia.
Affirming that President Buhari cared less on what would could have been driving the Americans towards Nigeria, Shehu said:
“For him, (Buhari) anyone who has money and shows a willingness to help Nigeria overcome her infrastructure deficit is welcome. The President told the Americans that Nigeria will leverage on the U.S facility to address current challenges confronting her power sector as well as general upgrade of infrastructure.”
The Trump administration had earlier taken a hard stance against the country and some of its leading actors with the imposition of a visa ban on ten leading political actors.
It is not known if the U.S. administration would on account of the development reverse the visa ban which affects four incumbent governors and two ministers all of who are members of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC.
