How Sharia Godfather Yarima Fell From Grace
Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima who introduced sharia as a political ideology in the country and used it to build a political power base has lost his political following, the Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC has said.
Riding on the sharia political ideology Yarima fought off many political battles including opposition from the former National Security Adviser, Gen. Aliyu Gusau who built several political rings around him but to no avail.
Under his watch, the first amputation of a convict was carried out in 2001. Indeed riding on his popularity among the Muslim faithful, Yarima following his second term in office sought the presidency but failed as Gen. Muhammadu Buhari defeated him for the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP 2007 presidential ticket
In Zamfara he, however, continued to be a phenomenon installing all the governors including the immediate past governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari.
However, as Yari neared the end of his second term in 2019 he looked towards upstaging his mentor’s Yarima’s Senate seat.
Yarima upon the interest of the incumbent governor did not seek a fourth term in the Senate but it is believed he also did not help the governor’s political agenda.
Eventually, their party, All Progressives Congress, APC was stopped from fielding candidates for all political offices in the state and with it Yari’s aspiration for the Senate exploded.
However, issues from the bitter struggle for the soul of the APC in Zamfara State have continued.
Now the spokesman of the APC in Zamfara State, Alhaji Ibrahim Maigandi GidanGoga, who incidentally served as a permanent secretary and commissioner for information in the Yarima government between 1999 and 2007 has described his former boss as an irrelevant factor in the state wallowing on the grass.
Reacting to recent comments by Yarima believed to be directed against Yari, Gidangoga at a press conference in Gusau on Saturday said:
“In his robust days, nobody dared talk when Yarima was talking as he was a tin-god in Zamfara State but the senator pulled down his own political dynasty himself.
“In fact, every successful politician in this state jumped to political limelight through the political might of the senator. He fell from grace to grass because he was walking faster than his shadow.”
“If anybody should say that he or she did not enjoy the government of Abdulaziz Yari, it must not be Yarima because we were insiders and we know what transpired between them,” he said.
”Now that APC did not form government in the state, he has indirectly become a member of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP), and one is wondering if that is not enough for anybody to understand that he is a political traitor.”
“I know Yarima very well because I worked very closely with him from 1999 when he became the first executive governor of the state. I worked with him as a permanent secretary and as a commissioner of information under him”.
“The senator said that he was preparing to go into presidential race come 2023 but I am promising him that he can not win the primaries even in Zamfara, his own state, let alone, winning in Nigeria as a whole.”
