Why Obaseki Chose To Swim Or Sink With APC
By Editor
Suggestions that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State would choose an alternative platform to pursue his second term aspiration have been dismissed by sources close to him who vow that he would either swim or sink with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
GreenWhiteGreen gathered that the outcome of the recent elections in Bayelsa State had toughened the decision of the governor.
Obaseki’s stance it was gathered is irrespective of the recent defection to the APC of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who is believed to have rejoined the APC on the prompting of the national chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Though Oshiomhole broke the bank to install Obaseki as governor in 2016, the two men have fallen apart. Oshiomhole is believed to be prepping Ize-Iyamu who was the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate in 2016 to upstage his one time protegee.
Sources close to the governor told GreenWhiteGreen that the way and manner the APC won the election in Bayelsa had made it imperative that Obaseki would be taking a risk in going to another party to contest the election.
“You saw how the APC won the election in Bayelsa and you think it would not be a risk to fight the federal establishment? No. I do not see Obaseki going to contest on another platform and he will fight for his second term within the APC,” the source said.
“It would be suicidal to try your weight against the federal might with all the apparatus of security and INEC at its disposal.”
The Obaseki permutation is further buttressed by the claim that loyalists of Obaseki dominate the structure of the party at the state level.
This belief of strength at the local level is buttressed by a high ranking former federal legislator who told GreenWhiteGreen that the governor would win any internal party match with anybody presented by Oshiomhole.
“The only way that Obaseki can be removed is if there is a Bini man who comes out without the hand of Oshiomhole. Once Oshiomhole’s hand is seen the Bini will draw back, because we cannot have two kings in Benin, our Oba and Oshiomhole,” the senior party chieftain said.
At this point there is no internal opposition against the governor from within the party that does not appear to be connected to the national chairman.
Meanwhile, the PDP which had at one time held back from savaging Obaseki has reconciled itself to the fact that Obaseki would not be defecting to its ranks.
The party has commenced serious efforts to prepare itself for the governorship election which enthusiasts believe would be easier for the party given what is believed to be the divided camp of the ruling party.
