Senator Ovie Omo-Agege As APC S/South Leader Is A Step In The Right Direction
By Aruviere Martin Egharhevwa
The battle was tough. The enemies were legion yet he trudged on. There were distractions everywhere. First he broke the jinx of a Delta Central senator returning to the senate. He was a lone combatant in the midst of time-tested foes.
He won his re-election against all odds. With a sitting governor from another party and a legion of enemies from within his own APC, he did not despair; rather he fought through the raging fire. He had his eyes fixed on the glory ahead.
Despite the litany of court cases, pre-and post elections litigations, he gave a good account of himself as a goal-getter and fought on. He struck the right chord and won the confidence of the principalities and powers in charge of Aso Rock.
He got the generous endorsement of Mr. President, who saw his role and charming performance in the last three years as asset to the party and the nation. Eventually, he emerged Deputy President of the 9th Senate. He is no other than His Excellency, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Deputy President, Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
On June 11, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege ran against Senator Ike Ekweremadu who has done 12 years as Deputy Senate President. Despite the opposition he mounted against the PDP-led Senate under former Senate President Bukola Saraki, PDP senators also gave him votes to defeat Ekweremadu with 68 votes to 37.
Today, in the order of national protocol, the Deputy Senate President is about the number 6 office holder in Nigeria after the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN.
By virtue of his position as the Deputy President of the Senate, he is the highest political office holder in the South-South geopolitical zone. His unanimous appointment as the APC political leader of the South-South came about not by his own volition but by virtue of his current national position and no politically inclined person would fault it.
There are governors (current and former), ministers and other top political office holders from the region who are leaders in their own right and in their various states but decided to come together under the auspices of the South-South caucus of the party to appoint a sole leader to provide leadership and give direction to the party in the region. To the glory of God, the mantle of leadership fell on Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and we must all respect the fact that it is God that gives power.
This is not the first time this is happening, when former Senate President, Bukola Saraki and others decamped to the PDP last year, he was appointed as the national leader of the party as the highest political office holder in the party and his appointment was one of the reasons Senator Akpabio gave for leaving the PDP for APC.
*Two time governor and national Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole was in attendance at the meeting and did not oppose the selection of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to be his South-South leader, Olorogun Great Ogboru whom the Senator defers to as his political leader was also in attendance and together with other leaders unanimously appointed Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as the leader of the party in the South-South.*
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s appointment as the party leader in the South-South geopolitical zone is a standard practice across political parties in Nigeria and there is absolutely nothing wrong about it.
Those who should be facing the EFCC for their very recent corrupt past are busy sponsoring e-rats to run riot on social media in their desperation to disparage the person of His Excellency, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is a bearer of the anointing of God’s grace and let it be made known to his traducers that you cannot fight an innocent man and win. Come what may, light will always triumph over darkness.
