Senate Makes History, Rejects A Buhari Appointee

The Senate has rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination of Raheem Olalekan appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun State because he is a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

It is the first time that the Ahmad Lawan Senate would reject a nominee from President Buhari and flies in the face of assertions by principal officers of the Senate that the 9th Senate would pass everything from Buhari.

The rejection of the nomination was despite strong efforts by Senate Deputy President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to save the nomination.

Omo-Agege said the nomination could not be turned down because the person who petitioned against the nomination, Oyebade Adebisi did not appear to defend the petition.

Omo-Agege’s assertion was despite the admission of Olalekan to the Senate Committee on INEC that he is a card-carrying member of the APC.

Those nominated for the position of REC and who guide elections in the states are not supposed to be members of political parties.

Olalekan, however, had boldly claimed his membership of the APC and role in the party’s campaigns during his appearance before the Senate panel.

When the panel’s report on the screening was brought before the Senate Omo-Agege’s bid to rescue the rejection was sternly rejected by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP leader, Senator Enyinninya Abaribe.

His position was maintained by the majority of the Senate which turned down the appointment which they said flies in the face of the constitution.
