N7.2 Billion Fraud: Kalu Moves To Go Out Of Jail, With Stay Of Execution
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is set to move for a stay of execution and appeal the conviction handed on him by a Federal High Court arising from a fraud of N7.2 billion for which he was found guilty.
Lawyers to the former governor of Abia State told the Daily Sun owned by Kalu that they had obtained the Certified True Copy, CTC of the judgment to enable them move for the release of the former governor from prison custody.
Kalu and a former director of finance in Abia State who worked under him as governor, Jones Ude Udeogo were found guilty by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos of several counts of fraud perpetuated against the government of Abia State.
Slok Nigeria Limited also owned by Kalu was also found guilty with the order that it should be wound up and assets forfeited to the Federal Government.
Justice Mohammed Idris in pronouncing Kalu guilty had said:
“On counts one, two, three, and four, you are sentenced to five years imprisonment on each count. On counts six to 11, you are sentenced to three years imprisonment each. On counts 23 to 33 you are sentenced to three years imprisonment on each count, while on counts 34 to 38, you are sentenced to 12 years imprisonment each. On count 39, you are sentenced to five years imprisonment.”
