How Anthony Joshua’s Discipline Regained Him Three Titles

Published

Nigerian born British fighter Anthony Joshua, Saturday night joined an elite group of heavyweight boxers who regained their crowns when he outpointed Mexican champion Andy Ruiz Jr in their rematch in Saudi Arabia.

The group of former boxers who regained their crowns include Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis, Floyd Patterson, Mike Tyson and Wladimir Klitschko.

Joshua won their rematch in Saudi Arabia by unanimous point decision from all three judges who scored the fight 119-109, 118-110 and 118-110 all in favour of Joshua and regained the IBF, WBA and WBO titles he lost months ago to Ruiz Jr in America.

It was, however, not easy for Joshua who survived several scares from Ruiz. He, however, maintained a discipline amidst heavy punches from the much heavier Mexican as he stood his balance through the rounds.

The eighth round was particularly scary for Joshua as Ruiz Jr piled the kind of punches that won him the fight in their first encounter but though shaken Joshua held on to the end of the round.

Ruiz Jr came into the fight to do a quick finish but Joshua was far more swift and had to his advantage his longer reach which was able to put aside the shorter and much heavier Mexican.

By the seventh round it was apparent that Ruiz Jr was becoming frustrated and as was evidenced by two illegal punches he threw at the end of the sixth round.

As the eighth round was about to end, the Mexican threw everything inside with desperate punches here and there but one or two that landed failed to bring Joshua down who by his game plan was also landing jabs here and there on the Mexican even while he kept at bay.

The jabs and the points collected by Joshua were apparent to the Mexican also through his bloodied face as in the final two rounds he searched desperately for a killer punch to bring down Joshua but Joshua with a tact discipline was always out of range.

Ruiz Jr is now asking for a rematch.
