Insinuations about a plot to derail Thursday’s launch of the Southwest regional security outfit known as Amotekun have been rebuffed.

At the centre of the alleged plot according to some news reports was the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to summon the six Southwest governors to a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday evening.

The essence of the meeting according to the news reports on television and social media was to sabotage the launch of the security outfit on Thursday morning. The launch of the outfit is to take place in Ibadan on Thursday.

However, multiple sources denied any such meeting summoned by the presidency.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu speaking to GWG claimed ignorance of any such meeting.

“I am not aware of any such meeting and there is none scheduled in the president’s programme for today or tomorrow,” Shehu told GWG.

A senior aide of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State also dismissed insinuations of a summons to Abuja.

“There is nothing like that. Some of the governors are already in town and others are being expected tomorrow,” the aide said on the condition of anonymity as he observed that information clearing concerning the security outfit is being done through the regional body, the DAWN Commission.

The outfit is aimed to boost security in the Southwest through the joint security outfit established by the six Southwest states.

Personnel for the outfit will be drawn from vigilante groups in the states working in collaboration with established government security outfits such as the police and the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
