Iran Strikes At US Bases In Iraq

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed early on Wednesday that it fired more than two thousand missiles at United States bases in Iraq.

The strikes were in retaliation for the US killing of the Guard’s top commander Qasem Soleimani in a  US drone attack inside the same Iraq a week ago.

The US Defence Department confirmed the attack in a statement.

The White House was still reviewing the development and was yet to issue a formal response.

The Defence Department confirmed that at least two sites were attacked, in Irbil and Al-Asad.

The attacks came before dawn in Iraq and there are no news of casualties at the time of this report but indications are that it would be minimal.

“We are aware of the reports of attacks on US facilities in Iraq. The president has been briefed and is monitoring the situation closely and consulting with his national security team,” White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

“We are warning all American allies, who gave their bases to its terrorist army, that any territory that is the starting point of aggressive acts against Iran will be targeted,” it said via a statement carried by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency.

The attacks came after the burial of Soleimani. The Iranian authorities came under serious pressure to retaliate the killing of Soleimani whose burial has led to an outpouring of affections on the streets with more than 50 persons crushed.

A senior Iranian official apparently to douse tension in a tweet said that the missile attack was a proportionate attack for the killing of Soleimani.

President Donald Trump in a statement said that the US was reviewing the situation and would make a statement in the morning.
