Residents of Aba have appealed to Governor. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia  State to fulfill his promise of reconstructing failed roads and completing on-going road projects during the dry season.

Ikpeazu had, in 2019, promised to complete and reconstruct failed roads in Aba during the dry season.

There are indications that the promise is yet to be fulfilled, as contractors have abandoned sites.

Some of the residents,  in an interview with NAN  urged the governor to fulfill the promise of reconstructing key failed roads in Aba, the state’s commercial hub, to enable businesses grow unhindered in 2020.

Mazi Uchenna Eke, a businessman, expressed fear that their businesses would face hard times, following the failure of even some newly-constructed roads around Aba business zones, if they were not reconstructed.

“The governor promised to work on road projects during the dry season but we have yet to see contractors on site.

“He said that the roads he constructed would not fail while he is in office, but look at Faulks road which had started failing even before the contractor left the site.

“See, the Tonimas-Umuule road has failed; Omnne road has also failed. The Aba-Owerri road which the contractors began working on since the first week of his first tenure in office is not completed yet,” he said.

Eke called on the governor to ensure that he left a legacy in Aba Ngwa, being a scion of the zone, adding that Ikpeazu had no excuse for failing to rescue Aba “of which he boasts as the nation’s SME hub.”
A transporter, Mr Socrates Onyenyiri, told NAN that nobody had seen contractors fixing any road.

“We have not seen anybody fixing any road; this is Faulks road and it had started failing since last year, even while still under reconstruction.

“Udeagbala road, which Ikpeazu began reconstructing last year, is now abandoned. On Port Harcourt road, we don’t understand what he is doing there for three years running now.

“The governor should work for Abians this year. If he fails to do anything before the rains return, Faulks road, Udeagbala and others will be impassable because of the abandonment and their failed nature”, Onyenyiri said.

Another resident, Chidi Nmecha, said that the governor also promised to work on Ngwa road, Eziukwu road, Obohia and other key roads in Aba to enable commerce thrive, saying, however, that he had yet to fulfill his promised.

He expressed the regret that failed roads had resulted in loss of businesses by Aba people to their Imo and Akwa Ibom state counterparts.

According to Nmecha, government’s failure to do the roads and improve infrastructure in the huge commercial city may impact negatively on its revenue.
