Bitter Memories For Mourinho As Liverpool Visits
By Ekene Dike
Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the premiership faces a serious test on Saturday when Jurgen Klopp’s raging team confronts Tottenham Hotspurs in what some are seeing as a grudge match.
The grudge? Tottenham coach, Jose Mourinho has won only two of ten engagements he has had with Klopp. The most bitter defeat for the Special One was apparently outside the premiership in the UEFA championship when both men coached different teams.
It was the UEFA Champions League semifinals first leg match between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in the 2012/2013 season at the Signal Iduna Park Stadium in Germany.
As at that time, Borussia Dortmund under the tutelage of Klopp were known for their counter attacking threat and they made use of it exceedingly well to dismantle, demolish, whitewash and brutalize Mourinho’s Real Madrid team 4-1.
Robert Lewandowski was the special man for the occasion as he scored the four goals for his team and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the consolation goal for Real Madrid.
In the second leg, Real Madrid won 2-0 but that wasn’t enough for them to advance to the final at Wembley.
Klopp’s Liverpool haven’t had to deal with the bitter feeling of defeat for the past 37 league games.
Their dominance over the past year has also enabled some of their players to scoop prestigious individual awards. An example is Virgil Van Dijk who won the European best player award and in the process beat two of the greatest footballers of the last decade, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Also, Sadio Mane also won the African player of the year award recently. They have been simply outstanding.
However, they face a tricky opposition in this weekend’s English Premier League match against Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur team.
That Jose Mourinho is one of the best managers in the world today is almost uncontestable producing the right results when they matter the most.
The Special One as he is famously called might just be the right man for the job in relation to ending Liverpool’s flawless run of victories.
Presently, Spurs have won just one in their last five games and are looking out of shape after the injury to their main striker Harry Kane.
Nevertheless, a flashback to the 2017/2018 season shows that Manchester City were unbeaten in the league until they faced Liverpool on the 14th of January.
Pep Guardiola’s side eventually had to succumb to a dogged Liverpool pressure , as the match ended 4-3 and that certified that Manchester City lost their first game of the season.
Manchester City’s dominance was akin to Liverpool’s present superiority and Spurs have the ability to beat them. This might just be a repeat of history because this match will ensue the same weekend it ensued in the 2017/2018 season.
Also, Jose Mourinho will want to revamp his declining reputation against Jurgen Klopp and also revenge for the humiliation he was forced to go through on that sad night in the UEFA Champions League Semifinal.
