Reps Order NERC To Stop Electricity Tariff Hike
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The House of Representatives, through its committee on Power has ordered the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to put a halt to its planned hike in electricity tariff.
It would be recalled that NERC had announced increment in electricity tariff to take effect from April, generating controversy.
The committee chaired by Aliyu Magaji disclosed this, on Tuesday, during a stakeholders’ meeting with NERC.
Magaji noted that it would be criminal for distribution companies, DISCOS, to continue to bill consumers if the estimated billing (prohibition) bill before the executive is not signed.
The Chairman of the committee also directed the representatives of the Minister of Power to send memo to all concerned agencies to ensure compliance
In his words; “There are so many unresolved questions. We have to do it logically to ensure that at least, all of us know the feedback from Nigerians.
“On behalf of this committee, I will liaise with the Senate Committee. Put this on hold until proper consultations are achieved. The committee is directing you to halt this process until the honourable speaker finishes his consultation.”
