Akwa Ibom APC: Unusual Silence As Rumours Spread Around Ita Enang

After the loud media campaign that preceded its participation in the 2019 General Election, key chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Akwa Ibom State have seemingly gone to sleep.

The party which vowed to win all levels of power in the state came out very badly wining only one seat in the 31 member House of Assembly, and that after a court judgment.

Not even the fabled political prowess of Senator Godswill Akpabio was able to salvage something for the party in his senatorial district.

The apathy in the party is reflected in the seeming disinterest by party supporters and stakeholders towards the re-run elections fixed for January 25, in Essien Udim local government for the Senatorial, Federal and state constituency seats.

It is indeed the opinion of some that party chieftains are yet to recover from their loss especially at the various courts.

And key stakeholders, and elders of the APC in the state apparently went underground immediately after the declaration of the result of the elections by the electoral umpire.

Their disappearance from the state throughout the period the litigation process was going on from the tribunal up to the Supreme Court even forced some observers to infer that all is not well among party chieftains.

There were even allegations of sabotage and compromise in the party immediately after the General Election leveled by some party candidates and their supporters who were aggrieved after losing out in the contest.

In fact it is being speculated in political circles in the state that party Chieftains and elders only made the public believe ahead of the elections that they were actually reconciled and working together.

However, some argued that they may have been disappointed over their abysmal loss in the elections after having boasted that they would sweep all the positions from the governorship to the state Assembly seats using federal might.

Some reliable sources in the party have expressed the opinion that the leadership tussle in the party may deepen ahead of the 2023 general elections as the factions in the party appear to have increased.

After the entry of Senator Akpabio and his supporters into the party ahead of the 2019 polls, the Akwa Ibom APC is currently parading three different factions-the faction loyal to Akpabio, the faction loyal to  Nsima Ekere  as well as the Senator Akpanudoedehe’s faction.

Analysts have even predicted the party may face serious crisis and disagreement in coming up with a governorship candidate ahead of 2023.

It is being speculated in some quarters that the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Ita Enang is eyeing the number one seat.

The speculation on him is not difficult to decipher given his endurance on the political field. He has held one office or the other since 1999.

He will, however, have the 2015 candidate, Umana Umana as a possible contender.
