When Delta’s Political Enemies Gathered For Obuh
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has eulogized the late Delta State born bureaucrat and politician, Sir Tony Obuh as a man who left a lasting legacy of peace to all noting his ability to bring together men of different persuasions at his funeral.
Okowa spoke weekend at the funeral service for the late Obuh at Agbor, Delta State that was attended by several personalities across the political, cultural and economic divide.
Among those present were Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Delta First Lady, Dame Edith Okowa among others.
Also present at the funeral were people who ordinarily would not attend the same function, but Obuh brought them together.
Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, the immediate past governor of the state who has been at loggerheads with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP mainstream in the state was present. Also present was Senator James Manager, the man who has in two successive elections stopped Uduaghan from actualizing his senatorial ambition.
Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, executive director, projects, Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, who has for long fought against the James Ibori/Okowa political mainstream in the state was also present.
Another prominent indigene of the state present was Engr. Victor Ochei, the former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly who is also another estranged member of the Ibori/Okowa Political family.
Also present were former deputy governor of the state, Sir Benjamin Elue, Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr Christopher Ochor, the State Head of Service, Mr Reginald Bayoko among others.
Governor Okowa himself fought off Obuh to win the governorship primary in 2014 but subsequently brought him into the new government by appointing him chairman, State Bureau of Pensions.
Okowa and his wife, Dame Edith were present at both the funeral service and the service of songs that preceded the burial.
It was perhaps in realization of Obuh’s unique humble disposition that Okowa at the funeral service, said:
“we want to give God the glory for a life well spent by our brother and friend, Tony Obuh; it is not how long you lived but how you lived and we are here to bid farewell to someone each and everyone of us will remember for a very long time.
“The pains as a result of his passage will soften when you look at this church and see a huge number of persons gathered to bid him farewell; Tony lived a very good life.
“He made a lot of impact on family and friends and did a lot for our state, Delta; we should have confidence that the family will continue to maintain the name Tony Obuh made while he was alive.
“Obuh worked for the people; he believed in the people. Tony was humble, he was a generous man even on his dying bed.”
