Corruption: Sagay Tongue Lashes TI, Who Made You Judge Over Us?
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The Chairman of Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, PACAC, Prof. Itse Sagay has dismissed Nigeria’s rating on the Corruption Perception Index published by Transparency International, TI, describing it as mere perception of selected persons.
Recall that TI ranked Nigeria at 146 out of 180 countries in the 2019 annual corruption perception index.
Sagay, while speaking on Channels TV news at 10:00pm, on Thursday, claimed that TI is a self-appointed body, whose weapon is based on perception.
“Who made TI, the judge of Integrity and Transparency, all over the world or particularly in Nigeria. They are just a self-appointed body and what they based their weapon on is perception.
“What is perception? that is what somebody thinks, that is not so in reality. Whose perception are you talking about?
The Chairman of PACAC noted that the rating of TI is based on the perception of those who are denied access to corrupt practices, stressing that the rating was far from what is obtainable in reality.
“Perception of those who had no access to easy money anymore since 2015. Is it the perception of those who had no access to petrol subsidy fraud anymore? or the perception of those who do not have to keep bank accounts because of BVN or those who are compelled to use TSAs instead of hiding money in banks all over the world.
“It cannot be the perception of the ordinary man who had voted this government in power with 5 million votes more and far above that of 2015, so whose perception? The whole exercise is irrelevant.”
He further noted that the anti-corruption stance of President Muhammadu Buhari has earned him the duty of championing anti-corruption drive in Africa, while stressing that the rating of TI is contrary to the perception of the rest of world.
“I do not see the rest of the world seeing it that way. The continent has appointed the President champion of anti-corruption. The fight against corruption has been acknowledged everywhere in the world,” he stated.
