World Cup: Easy Ride For Africa’s Football Giants?
By Ekene Dike
The draw for the qualification for the FIFA World Cup has pitched Africa’s big sides with easy meat as they weren’t drawn alongside tough opponents.
African Champions Algeria lead the way in group A and they were drawn against Burkina Faso who were finalists in 2013, Niger and Djibouti. The likes of Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Ismael Bennacer will outplay their opponents and sail through to the next round of qualification.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria were also fortunate to be drawn against Cape Verde, Central Africa Republic and Liberia in Group C. Nigeria’s present squad is one of the standout teams at the moment and possess an avalanche of talents. Leicester’s Wilfred Ndidi has been doing the most for the Foxes and Victor Osimhen has set French Ligue 1 on fire with his goal scoring prowess.
Mohammed Salah’s Egypt have been favored too in Group E. Gabon , Libya and Angola will try all they can to stop the Pharaohs from booking a ticket to Qatar 2022.
However, the Teranga Lions will face tricky oppositions from Congo, Namibia and Togo. They are expected to progress without facing any major challenges.
Nevertheless, groups of death are seen in Group D and Group G. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and the Elephants of Ivory Coast will have to fight for top spot with Mozambique and Malawi in Group D.
Also, the Black Stars of Ghana and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa are to battle for qualification alongside Zimbabwe and Ethiopia in Group G.
Although, football is a game of upsets. Most big teams prefer to avoid the occurrence of surprising defeats and will always exhibit utmost concentration in order to appear on world football’s biggest stage.
