Edo 2020: Controversy Over PDP Rep’s Praise Of Obaseki
Controversy has broken out over comments by a member of the House of Representatives belonging Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on the re-election prospects of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Member representing Esan West, Esan Central and Igueben Federal Constituency Joe Edionwele, was reported to have praised Governor Obaseki during a thanksgiving service to celebrate the electoral victory of Hon. Marcus Onobun, a member of the Edo State House of Assembly, in Iruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area.
He said, “I want to tell you to continue your good works. It does not matter how long you spend in power. It is the legacy you leave behind that matters. Let it be known to you that those who are with you are more than those against you.
“It is about development and since that is what you stand for, there is no party when it comes to development. You have constructed roads, rebuilt schools and health centres. I want to thank you on behalf of the church. May God perfect all that concerns you.”
He noted, “We need you to construct some roads in Iruekpen, not because we will vote for you, but because you are a good man.”
Supporters of the governor had following the utterance cited it as another endorsement from a PDP chieftain for the governor’s second term aspiration.
However, a senior chieftain
of the PDP dismissed the assertion saying:
“You can see even from the video that he (Edionwere) said that he was going to
vote against the governor. It is only members of the APC who are saying it and
they are just twisting the words to suit them.”
The chairman of the state chapter of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih had last weekend rebuked Senator Daisy Danjuma and Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State over their open campaign for the Edo governor’s second term aspiration.
