Maryam Sanda, the daughter-in-law of a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was on Monday sentenced to death for killing her husband following the discovering of nude picture of a woman in his phone, an Abuja High Court affirmed on Monday.

Mrs. Sanda was married to Bilyamin Bello, a real estate developer who was also a son to Dr. Mohammed Bello, a former minister of communication, deputy comptroller of customs and national chairman of the PDP.

The guilty verdict pronounced by Justice Yusuf Halilu on Monday, however, triggered serious commotion as the convict tried to run out of the court after her guilt was handed out by the judge.

Her mother, Mrs. Maimuna Aliyu also went wild as she ran from the back of the court wailing and lamenting forcing the court to suspend proceedings for some time.

Following the plea by her lawyer, Regina Okotie-Eboh, Justice Halilu ruled:
“It has been said that thou shall not kill. Whoever kills in cold blood shall die in cold blood”.

“Maryam Sanda should reap what she has sown,” the Judge said, adding “it is blood for blood” as he found her guilty.

The prosecution called a total of six witnesses to prove its case that the defendant who had been in a stormy marriage with her husband killed him after she picked his phone and discovered the nude picture of a woman in it.

Mrs. Sanda had in her defence denied killing her husband saying:

“He pushed me and as I was falling down, I mistakenly broke his Shisha bottle and the water inside spilled on the floor.

“He pinned me to the ground and I heard our daughter crying. I told him to leave me so that I could attend to her and he loosened up a bit and I struggled to my feet.”

According to her, the husband fell against the broken Shisha pot and in an attempt to hold her down again.

“I saw a broken bottle pricked into his chest which I removed and covered the chest with a scarf.”
