The camps of the minister of information Alhaji Lai Mohammed and that of Governor Abdulrhaman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State are set to play out their supremacy battle in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of a state constituency bye-election in six weeks.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC on Tuesday set March 14, 2020, as the date for the by-election into the House of Assembly seat in Patigi Constituency of Kwara.

The bye-election is to fill the vacancy arising from the death of the member representing Patigi Constituency in the House, Mr Ahmed Rufai, who died on Tuesday Dec. 3, 2019.

GreenWhiteGreen gathered that the camps of the governor and the minister are now pitched in battle over the selection of the candidate of the party for the election.

The structure of the party is in the hands of the minister who through his Man Friday, Bashir Bolarinwa who is the chairman of the state chapter of the party.

Agents of the governor had for long been agitating against the continued retention of Bolarinwa as chairman.

A fresh offensive against him last week was stoutly resisted by the chairman who warned those attempting it that they could only be pushing the party towards instability.

It is now being interpreted that the move to force the chairman out of office could be directed towards putting the governor’s man in office and as such ensuring that someone inclined to the governor becomes the candidate of the party for the election.
“The governor wants to put his man forward as a candidate but the structure of the party is in the hands of Lai and that may have accounted for the moves against the chairman,” one stakeholder said on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the governor is believed to be also widening his reaches to build capacity against Lai.

As part of his moves, he recently went with Alhaji Moshood Mustapha, a former associate of Bukola Saraki to Ghana where the former was conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Nigerian community in Ghana.

The move a source in Ilorin said was part of the governor’s move to consolidate his base ahead of the onslaught against Lai Mohammed and Bolarinwa.
