Two Ladies Nabbed For Selling Sister’s Baby
Two sisters who allegedly sold the newborn baby of their mentally deranged sister for N350,000 have been apprehended by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.
Also arrested with the two sisters, Juliet and Chioma, were two other women including a pastor’s wife who bought the baby.
Arrested alongside the siblings were two women, one of them a Pastor’s wife, who bought the one-month-old baby.
The mother of the baby, identified as Doris it was gathered had given birth five times but presently has none of her children with her.
It was gathered that one of her brothers named Chibuzor blew the lid after he arrived to discover that his sister’s newly born baby was not available. One of the sisters was said to have informed him that the baby was given to a lady to take care as she gave the excuse of their sister’s mental condition.
Chibuzor was said to have reported the matter to NAPTIP which waded in and eventually arrested the two sisters following investigations.
Mrs. Alabi who bought the baby confessed that she approached Mrs. Efe her childlessness and the problem it was causing her in her home which led them to the plan of purchasing the baby.
She said: “My marriage was at the verge of breaking because of my state of bareness. I was mocked. I tried other means, the last one being Intrauterine Insemination, IUI but it did not work. I approached the Pastor’s wife, (Efe) who has been a friend. I narrated what i have been going through and told her i wanted to adopt a child.
“At first, she told me she also had no idea on the procedure for adoption.
Later, she called me in November last year to inform me that she knew a family which pregnant sister was insane and could not take care of the baby. I bought baby things for the child and in January , when the baby was born, she brought him to me.
“My husband was not aware of the plan because he was away. I had to undergo a treatment which made me look pregnant . This was to give people around the impression that the child was mine . when I got him, I called my husband to inform him I had been delivered of a baby boy. I did it so that I could have him as mine,” she stated.
Chioma, a sister to the mother of the baby said:
“Doris is my younger sister from same parents. She was married and had three children for her husband before she fell sick. Her husband went away with two children and left the third one with her. But the child went missing. She got impregnated by an unknown man and but the baby could not be found till date.
“We had to approach the Pastor’s wife to help us take care of this child so that same fate would not befall him. We did not sell the child as alleged. She (Pastor’s wife) gave us N350,000 to use to treat Doris. But she (Doris) stole the money and squandered it in the village because it was handed to us in her presence.”
Commander of NAPTIP Lagos Zone, Mr. Daniel Atokolo speaking on the development enjoined Nigerians to explore legal means of adoption as he affirmed that the purchase of children was an offence.
He vowed that the arrested women would be taken to court.
