Police Bullet Kills School Girl During Okada Ban Protest

A school girl identified as Mariam Shobukola was, on Wednesday, shot in Iyana-Ipaja area of Alimosho in Lagos during a clash between Motorcyclists and police over the ban of motorcycles and tricycles in some part of the state.

Mariam a SS 2 student of DST School, was hit by a stray bullet in the middle of the riot.

A stray bullet was said to have hit Mariam, a pupil of the DST School, Aboru, who was caught in the middle of the riot.

However, the girl was taken to Peak Health Hospital, Aboru for the treatment, with doctor confirming it that the girl was hit on her buttocks.

The riot led to a patrol van belonging to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority set ablaze at the Iyana-Ipaja roundabout, a police utility vehicle was vandalised at Alaguntan. 

It was learnt that protesters gathered at Iyana-Ipaja roundabout to protest against the ban of motorcycles and tricycles, before police were deployed in the scene to disperse them.

It was reported that police shot tear gas canisters into the crowd and live bullets in the air, leading to confrontation from hoodlums, who joined the protest.
