Deregistration Of Parties: INEC’s Decision Prejudicial – Anambra YDP

The Anambra State chapter of the Young Democratic Party, YDP has expressed strong disavowal of the deregistration of political parties by the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The chapter in a statement said that given the fact that 35 political parties had dragged INEC to court that the decision was meant to give a fait accompli to the court given that ruling on the issue was slated for February 17, 2020.

“INEC by this announcement has not only acted with flagrant disregard to the aforementioned matter before the court but has also tried to box the court into a tight corner,” the chairman of the state chapter, Barr. Henry Adibe said in the statement.

“Importantly, one wonders how of all the vital issues bedeviling INEC, deregistration of political parties became top on their agenda even when the electoral circle is yet to be concluded and Local Government election yet to be held in the greater percentage of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria.

“Indeed, we call on INEC to revert to the status quo ante, await the ruling of the court on this matter, complete the electoral circle by conducting Edo and Ondo elections, and be ready to comply with the constitutional right of freedom of association which is an inalienable right of every human being.

“Finally, we call on our teeming members and supporters to remain calm notwithstanding this ugly situation created by INEC. This is not new to us as a  political party.

“Recall that when we applied to be  registered  as a political  party, INEC and the powers that be prevented us from being registered as a political party even after meeting the necessary requirements.”
