Twitter users have disagreed with the minister of information, Lai Mohammed, that the $500m loan request by his ministry for the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) will enable the station to compete with the likes of Cable News Network (CNN).

The minister, while appearing before Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Loans to defend the $500m loan the ministry applied for from President Muhammadu Buhari’s $29.96b loan for funding critical infrastructure in the country, argued that the fund is for the digitalization of NTA to enable its meet international standards.

The statement has created divided opinion on Twitter, with many Nigerians analyzing the fund requested in wake of other present challenges of the country.

Some Twitter users argued that the sum of $500m (equivalent to 181billion in Nigeria currency) is a huge sum of money, claiming that it will be another means to siphon funds.
