Tinubu 70

By Emmanuel Aziken

The weekend anniversary of the presidential election may have indicated the increasing proximity of the 2023 presidential election in which the incumbent, Muhammadu Buhari is statue barred from contesting.

In that light searchlight is increasingly being put on the leading contenders for the tickets of the major political parties.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State who had in recent times been projected to be a possible contender came out to disavow interest in the 2023 race on the premise of the principle of rotation. He said in an interview that the North would not go against the principle of rotation and that it would be the turn of the South in 2023.

Some have alleged that the Kaduna governor was trying to position himself for the vice-presidential ticket.

Willy-nilly, the South’s most visible contender, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has now been put in the limelight and was especially so on social media on Monday morning.

Not only because of the El-Rufai comment, but also because of an interview granted by Senator Ahmed Yarima where he alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari had no power transfer agreement with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Senator Yarima’s comments and the anniversary of the presidential election in which Tinubu played a loud role in bringing Buhari back to power helped to cause Tinubu to trend on twitter on Monday morning.
