Bayelsa Loss: Who Will Lyon Blame?
By Chuks Ekpeneru
Not long after he was declared winner of the November 16, 2019 Bayelsa State governorship election, David Lyon visited Prophet T. B. Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations, Lagos.
On that ocassion, T. B. Joshua promised to deliver an important message for Lyon to reflect on before his inauguration.
The finality of the Supreme Court judgment which annulled his victory on Wednesday would undoubtedly have taken over the mediation space Joshua tasked Lyon with.
Indeed, not much was known of Lyon outside the Niger-Delta region. His capture of the All Progressive Congress (APC) ticket for the governorship election of November 16 was through the machinery of the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timpre Sylva.
Following the victory and as inauguration day approached, there was massive lobbying for positions in the yet to be formed government.
Prominent PDP members before and after the election openly threw their weight behind Lyon.
Before the Supreme Court shocker of that Thursday morning Lyon had in the early hours conducted a rehearsal for the swearing-in ceremony at the remodelled Samson Siasia Sports complex.
Heavily armed security operatives backed by armoured personnel carrier were stationed in front of the stadium.
APC’s flags and other insignia were hoisted at strategic places in town with that of PDP pulled down
However, questions must be asked of a candidate that may not have thought of the suitability of his running mate.
During the PDP Presidential primaries of 2007, late President Umaru Yar Adua was reported to have expressed his dislike for a particular running mate who was eventually dropped for Goodluck Jonathan.
As a candidate, Lyon had a running mate that used Degi Biobara in his primary school certificate while the document from his secondary education bore Adegi Biobarakumo.
The name changed to Degi Biobarakuma in his university certificate while the name metamorphosed to Degi Biobarakuma Wangaha in his MBA certificate.
Lyon, Sylva and the APC have themselves to blame as they lost the opportunity to enter into a core oil-producing state. Perhaps the party was already counting the dividend of the election without putting their house in order
This, some political observers say may heap more pressure on already embattled APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole.
A party that was supposed to right the wrongs of the PDP has ended up throwing up issues that in saner clime, the owner of the five names ought to be dragged before law enforcement agencies.
For Lyon, it is a very bitter pill to swallow, but this may be the issue T. B. Joshua wanted him to reflect on before he makes another appearance on the political scene.
